From bright yellow life jackets at the lake to our Equine Program participants’ red t-shirts, summer has been pretty colorful so far at The Hill.
Recently, we added even more color to our foster care community through the art of tie-dye. Each child who participated was provided a shirt and detailed instructions on how to tie their shirts with rubber bands to achieve the desired pattern.
Tie-dying might be a typical summertime activity, but there were several moments over the course of the afternoon that were really cool. For example, many children were helping one another with their shirts and sharing the dye with one another.
We loved to see everyone working together to create something unique (and the grace that was given when someone accidentally dyed someone else’s shoe).
It was also really fun to see how Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries staff members, including Community Coordinator Daisy Marquez, encouraged children to be creative and make bold choices. But most especially, it was remarkable to hear—multiple times—children say to one another, “It’s okay if it’s not perfect.”
One girl even elaborated, “That’s kind of the whole point.”
It is such a privilege to give these children the environment to grow and make fun memories like tie-dying shirts, and it’s such a joy to witness small moments like this, when children are able to encourage one another with the simple truth that it’s okay not to be perfect. We hope they know how loved they are, anyway!
