Her Success in 2020

When our staff were recently asked which of our children stood out to them as a child who had shown remarkable progress in 2020, several of them answered “Roxy!”

Nine-year-old Roxy, along with her brother and sister Coby and Charly, were recently adopted by our Respite Home Parents, Josh and Brittany McCaskey. The McCaskeys have seen remarkable improvements in all three of their children, and were excited to share about Roxy’s growth since arriving at Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries in Harrisburg, MO.

“Roxy is completely different than when she first came,” Brittany said. “We used to see a lot of behaviors that resulted because she couldn’t understand what was going on – she felt out of control. We have worked with her for a long time to help her find her voice. Now she has learned to use her voice instead of yelling and running around.

“She has grown so much in her self-confidence! She loves meeting new people, having conversations with them and showing off her talents. She is confident in who she is and is flourishing! We are so proud of her.

“She’s a quick learner in everything she does. She’s excelled in gymnastics (she went from beginner to pre-team in a year’s time.) She’s playing guitar AND singing entire songs, even though she just started learning in July! She can choose a song, look at it and practice the chords and lyrics for an hour or two and then she just knows it.

“Roxy is excelling in school as well. We are homeschooling her this year for the first time, and she has latched on to it. She is not only doing well with her core subjects, but she is learning so much about her faith and The Word. Roxy is also growing socially as well. She is recognizing how to be thoughtful and kind to others.

“To see her maturity and confidence now and remember the young seven-year-old girl who came here in September 2018 is such a huge testament to the Lord! He has done such a great and mighty work in her.”

Roxy is great friends with the youngest daughter of Aaron & Mary Vassar, Home Parents in The Atherton Home. The Vassars are well-acquainted with Roxy and were happy to share about the growth and progress they’ve witnessed.

“We all enter this world with a God shaped void which leaves us grasping to fill the emptiness we feel inside,” Mary said. “Couple this with a lack of nurturing as a child, and it creates a recipe for unhealthy coping mechanisms that can bring devastating consequences. When we first met Roxy, though she was very sweet and bold, she carried internal chaos. There were long nights, long days, and many tears as what had been done was being undone. Then Josh and Brittany entered the picture.

“The McCaskeys not only provided the consistency, permanency, and nurture that Roxy desperately needed, they became the true hands and feet of Jesus for Roxy. Through adoption she has gained a sweet and pure understanding of the gospel that He desires for all of us to grasp. The child that we see today, though still a work in progress, is a child who is beaming with hope and life. She has let down her guard because she has learned that adults can be safe, and that she always has a Good Father who has an amazing plan for her life. A plan that included being placed at Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries, and more importantly, with Josh and Brittany. Not only is her earthly home secured, but her eternal home is secured, because love showed up, and true love makes us conquerors and no longer victims.”

It is honestly hard for me to remember some of those hard moments in the beginning with Roxy, because she’s been so fantastic during this past year. I love being her mom. She is just such an amazing young girl and I know she’s going to do amazing things for the Kingdom. We are honored to be her parents and are excited about getting to help shape her into a godly young woman!
