Adaptability and Christmas Memories

So many groups and organizations go above and beyond each year to host our children and make sure they have a wonderful Christmas. As the 2020 Christmas season approached, we were all having doubts about how many of our traditional Christmas parties would be able to happen. Yet the theme of this year became “adaptability,” as those hosts figured out ways to hold their celebrations in a safe, fun and healthy manner.

Woodlandville United Methodist Church in Mid-Missouri hosted their annual Christmas shopping spree. This is always a fun opportunity for the kids to pick out gifts for their loved ones using pretend money, so they can feel like they are purchasing the gifts themselves! This year, to adapt the event for social distancing, etc., each home chose a 30-minute time slot to arrive at the church and pick out their gifts. As they arrived at the church at their assigned time, children took turns going inside to pick out their gifts, which were placed in a basket that had been sanitized between each use. It was a lovely day for the other children in the home to wait outside and play until it was their turn to go “shopping.” This also allowed siblings to secretly shop for each other!

The First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, Missouri’s deacons normally host a lovely dinner for all of our homes at their church each Christmas. Rather than simply canceling it, they were creative and happy to adapt, by bringing each of our families Christmas crafts and Shakespeare’s pizza, salad, and cookies.

The Burnam family also hosts a memorable Christmas party for all of our homes each year in Columbia, MO but knew they had to make some adaptations. This year, the Burnams ordered loads of carry-out from Olive Garden and delivered it themselves, along with one gift for each child. All of the food and gifts were delivered to every home’s front porch.

Following the Burnam Christmas drop-off, Home Parent Mom in the Petersheim Home, Brittany Mooneyham, had this to say about one of their young girl’s response to her gift.

“I’ve never seen this girl so happy. She was crying happy tears. She got her number one item!” (Which was “Five Nights at Freddy’s” stuffed animals.)

We wish we could show you the video of her older sister hugging her as she laughed and cried at the same time. It was such a precious moment, and the perfect reminder of how grateful we are to all of the folks who make WONDERFUL Christmas memories for our children each year. Thank you, and may you have a blessed and Merry Christmas with your own style of adaptability!
