We have an exciting new class as part of our After-School Program—Sarah Hays, one of our foster parents, is teaching ASL on Wednesday afternoons!
So far, they have learned the alphabet, colors, animals, numbers, and more!
“We love to learn through play, so we’ve incorporated games like hangman and headbands, using only ASL,” Daisy Marquez, Coyote Hill Community Coordinator, shared.
Everyone has loved learning ASL. Some children are even teaching their friends what they are learning!
Recently, they participated in a scavenger hunt with a special twist—all of the clues were spelled out using the ASL alphabet. After children spelled out the clues, they would run outside to find a bird, a tree, a bug, or a flower.
Learning ASL has so many tangible benefits, such as enhancing listening and communication skills, expanding self-expression, and engaging the brain in a new way. It is also a beautiful way to connect with one another and be creative.
One example of this creativity unfolded after the scavenger hunt! Some of the children started playing “Red Light, Green Light” using the signs for colors.
We are so grateful for Sarah and Daisy. It is awesome to see all of the enrichment activities and skills children learn during the After-School Program.
