TBRI® Gives Parents Practical Tools to Connect

When you decide to become a foster parent, it sets you on a journey that is full of turns, detours, and unexpected destinations.

Ryan and Jamie Skinner have been fostering for seven years, but they are still learning and growing as foster parents through Coyote Hill’s fall Trust-Based Relational Intervention® training. TBRI® provides trauma-informed tools and strategies centered around connection, correction, and empowerment.

“Connecting is the main thing that I’ve been learning,” Jamie said. “When there’s more connection, you will naturally have less correction.”

TBRI® gives practical tools on how to build secure attachment with children through appropriate tone and volume of voice, playful interactions, behavior matching, and healthy touch. This training demonstrates a variety of ways to connect through videos and practicing scenarios together.

Jamie shared that practicing playful interactions at home have helped her 8-year-old daughter during their morning routine, which can be a challenging part of their day. Her daughter may lose screentime as a consequence, but she can earn it back if she does a chore. Jamie shared that some mornings, her chore is to turn on music and dance as she completes all of the steps she needs to do to get ready.

“Incorporating these principles and play makes things go so much better,” Jamie said. “There is less of a negative reaction and more connection.”

Because of your faithful giving, we can provide this resource to foster parents as they continue to gain experience and learn new strategies to care for and equip the children in their home for success.
