Meet Ranger and Roy – Two Coyote Hill Horses

A big part of the Coyote Hill family is our furry friends. Many of our homes have dogs, and Overton Arena is full of horses who help our kids grow and learn. Equine Program and Barn Manager Rebecca Buchholz (Miss Rebecca) conducted a one-on-one interview with two of Coyote Hill’s horse friends – Ranger and Roy. Read their answers below to learn more about these fun fellows.

Ranger

Ranger, Sorrel colored horse at Overton Arena | coyotehill.org
Ranger is the longest standing equine resident at Coyote Hill!

Q: How old are you?

A: I am 35 years old…ish. I was here waaaaaaaaaaay before Overton Arena was ever built, so the vets guess my age according to my teeth (I am missing half of them, so it wasn’t easy for them!) My birthday is May 26 – the same day as John Wayne’s birthday!

Q: What breed and color horse are you?

A: I am a ‘Pony of Questionable Breeding.’ No one can be certain about my breed. I am a perfect mish-mash of cute, trustworthy, smart, and ornery! I am a sorrel-colored pony, which is a lovely reddish brown color.

Q: Who is your best friend at the barn?

A: I’m a pretty sociable fellow. I also love kids! Out in the field, however, I can usually be seen hanging out with Lacy Jean, Cinnamon, or Willamena.

Q: What is your favorite snack?

A: It changes. Right now I am a fan of the apple-flavored horse snacks, and most brands of cheese puffs.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Coyote Hill?

A: I love children! We have fun adventures together and I take caring for them very seriously! I love how they brush my face, bring me snacks, and like to do the same type of mischief I do. Miss Rebecca tried to retire me, but I get pretty sad without a job to do and children to take care of, so she took me out of retirement, and uses me for lighter children, less challenging trail rides, ground work, and therapy. I love it!

Roy

Roy, Missouri Foxtrotter horse in Overton Arena | coyotehill.org
Roy is a Missouri Foxtrotter, which means he can do a few additional gates such as a pace as well as a foxtrot.
His registered name is Sensation’s Royal Rambler.

Q: How old are you?

A: I am 21 years old. I was born on April 27th, 1998 and I have a birth certificate to prove it!

Q: What breed and color horse are you?

A: I am a Missouri Foxtrotter. My color is black. The Missouri Foxtrotter originated in… you guessed it… Missouri!

Q: Who is your best friend at the barn?

A: I like hanging out with Eli, but I like keeping my lady friends with me as well – Cinnamon and Willamena.

Q: What is your favorite snack?

A: Sour Cream and Onion chips. I prefer Pringles, but Lay’s are also yummy.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Coyote Hill?

A: I love living outside and living “the herd life.” Miss Rebecca is really protective of our mental states, being that we spend our time helping humans balance their mental states (that can be stressful on us!)  God created horses to be outside, so Miss Rebecca makes sure we get as much time outside as possible, whether it’s riding in the outdoor arena, going on a relaxing trail ride, or resting and playing with my herd mates in a field like we were meant to do.
