We hosted over 100 people for Hope for the Journey, a simulcast conference, in Hannibal on April 15. This conference is an incredible resource for foster and adoptive parents, as well as any individual who works or interacts with children that have experienced trauma.
It offers insights and greater understanding of Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®) and the TBRI® Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting Principles.
It was also a great chance to connect with other agencies in the community. We hosted the conference at The Crossing – 48th Street Location in Quincy, IL. We partnered with C.A.R.E. for Hancock, IL, and Connect Child and Family. We also had other groups sharing information with families at tables, including Court-Appointed Special Advocates, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, and Show Me Healthy Kids.
It was also a great opportunity to share trauma-informed strategies with local teachers, social workers, day care providers, and others who work with children from hard places.
“It was a great training!” One participant said. “As a case worker for Children’s Division, I wish this were a required training for both our staff but also all foster parents. The information was great and really made me stop and think about the way I work with the kiddos on my caseload.”
“I think it was a huge success,” said Brittany McCaskey, Hannibal Area Coordinator and TBRI® Practitioner. “I think there’s been lots of connections for people to see how they can implement these strategies for themselves and their families. We’ve had lots of schools and day cares here, and they have left energized to take this back to their centers. I’m really excited to see how this will have a long-term impact on children and families in this area.”
Another participant said, “I think it provides great information on trauma, recognizing it, and knowing that each child responds differently. I work with children daily who have experienced trauma and I know this training has opened my eyes on how to respond to that.”
We also had at least one family from each of our Hannibal STARS classes participate in Hope for the Journey, which was awesome to see!
If you are interested in attending Hope for the Journey, we are hosting another conference in Columbia on June 8-9, 2023. Contact Paige Douce for more information!
