In mid-December, we hosted a respite event alongside the Agape Ministries at The Crossing Church in Columbia. The Crossing’s Agape Ministries serve children and adults with disabilities, providing accommodations and resources.

68 children attended this event, and we had many volunteers ensuring everything went smoothly.
This respite night included so many fun games and activities, including a bounce house, basketball, 9-Square, air hockey, foosball, and more! We also had a craft room, a movie room, and a nursery.
Respite events are an essential way we create space for foster parents to take time for themselves to rest, replenish, or take care of their own needs.
We heard from many parents who were able to go on a date night, complete some last-minute Christmas shopping, and run errands. One family dropped their younger children off at the respite event and were able to spend intentional time with their older children. Another couple was able to celebrate their anniversary!
These events would not be possible without dedicated volunteers who spend several hours on a Saturday engaging and encouraging children impacted by foster care. From playing basketball to completing crafts to being a one-on-one buddy, these volunteers are such a great reflection of the Coyote Hill community.
Having consistent volunteers provides consistency for children, which is so important. It provides parents peace of mind to know the volunteers are aware of their child’s needs, and it increases comfort and familiarity for children.
We are so grateful for the love and care they gave to the children who attended this respite event. We are also so thankful for the Agape volunteers who were also essential to this event!
