A Day in the Life of a Family Advocate

Our Family Advocates provide emotional support, logistical support, advice, and training to help sustain parents as they care for children who have experienced trauma and hardship. But what does that look like on a day-to-day basis? Check out a day in the life of Family Advocate, Lorenzo Scott!

When Lorenzo starts his day, he adopts a “Let’s do it!” attitude. “I start my day by asking myself, ‘Whom can I contact and where can I serve best in order to meet needs today?’”

On this particular day, Lorenzo is in charge of Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries’s intake phone. This means he is responsible for communicating with case workers when a child enters care. For example, today he received a call about a 15-year-old boy. He asks relevant questions about the child’s background in order to communicate effectively with Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries parents to ensure that this child is welcomed into a home that is a good, sustainable fit.

Then, Lorenzo works to meet specific needs of his families. Today, he is helping parents make up CPR/first aid training sessions in order to receive their license, helping two families navigate transitions related to a recent and an upcoming adoption, and attempting to track down a bunk bed for two brothers.

“Family advocates provide the support families need to succeed in the long-term,” Lorenzo said. “I like to see my families love the journey, even when it’s hard. I love to build connections with people and help them know why they do what they do.”

We love how our Family Advocates constantly step up to meet needs and provide tangible, relational support to our foster families.
