Sam and Tom: Managing Our Foster Care Community

Ask any home owner if they enjoy doing all of the maintenance and upkeep that goes along with owning a home, and you will most likely hear their recent problems with a stuck window or door, a deck that needs refinished, or a multitude of other continual issues that are all a part of home ownership.

Now imagine that scenario many times over, like all of the buildings and homes at the Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries Foster Care Community, and suddenly you’re looking at things like:

  • 40 toilets on site, all needing maintained to make sure no unnoticed water leaks add hundreds of dollars to the monthly water bill.
  • 68 doors within ONE home – when you count all exterior, interior and double closet doors. That’s a LOT of hinges to keep swinging properly, without even counting all of the cabinet doors in the home!
  • The list goes on and on…and ON!

That’s where Property Managers Sam Coy and Tom Head come in. Sam has been on staff for several years now, not only managing the property but also helping with vocational training and making sure the kids on site who want to learn practical skills have the opportunity to do so. Tom came on staff in May of 2021 to give a very over-worked Sam some help.

Sam taught these three teen boys how to change out a water pump in the tractor.

“I had heard of Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries for several years, through my church (Harrisburg Christian Church) and other places,” Tom said. “I’ve known Sam through church, also. I watched some of the homes being built through the years and eventually volunteered to help with some of the projects, like the firepit/porch swing set up that Sam created for The Petersheim Home.”

“I enjoyed working with Sam and Larry on some volunteer projects,” Tom said. “I told them that if they ever had an opening for an extra hand, to let me know, and one day this spring they did!”

Sam and Tom do an incredible variety of projects on the 300-acre property, from the repair and remodeling needed in the homes, to construction, to the maintaining of fencerows and pastures. We’ve featured stories on some of Sam’s construction and vocational training work before, like Micah’s Bridge, the archery range and the duplex on site.

Involving the Kids

“I’ve been in construction all of my life, so I really enjoy the on-site construction projects,” Sam said. “I love being able to involve kids who are wanting to learn, and teach them simple things like putting screws in the boards of a new playground, or more complicated things like pouring concrete for the sidewalks at the Ubl Home.”

“I do enjoy the projects that allow us to involve the kids,” Tom added. “We try to help the kids whenever we see an opportunity to teach them something, and we always enjoy their company when we are working on something at their home. I’ve also enjoyed working on sprucing up a home when it becomes empty. When a family moves out, and before a new foster family moves in, we go in and try to make things as fresh and new as possible. It’s so rewarding to know that everything we can do to improve the house will help make it a safer and happier home for the new children and foster parent.”
