Becoming a Foster Parent: MO C.A.R.E. Training

Recently, the Missouri Department of Social Services updated the required training for prospective foster and adoptive parents in Missouri. This new curriculum is Missouri Caregiver and Adoption Resource Education (MO C.A.R.E.). This curriculum is based on research and new science surrounding brain development. This sets new foster parents up for success as they care for children who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect.

Since we started licensing foster families throughout mid-Missouri in 2020, you have probably heard us reference STARS trainings frequently. We have often celebrated STARS graduation or referenced upcoming STARS trainings in our newsletters. Now, we will be referencing MO C.A.R.E. instead of STARS.

Beginning in January 2024, Coyote Hill has implemented the MO C.A.R.E. curriculum. Our Jefferson City team finished our last STARS training in mid-February. Our Family Advocates have received MO C.A.R.E training, and they are currently in the midst of training our first cohort of prospective foster parents using this new curriculum.

This virtual training is reaching families in all of our areas! MO C.A.R.E. is a 30-hour training that takes place over ten sessions. The main modules include child development, attachment theory, navigating grief, trauma-related behaviors, trauma-informed parenting, creating a nurturing environment, reunification, importance of sibling relationships, parenting in racially diverse families, mental health considerations, and more. We are very excited about these updates and we know that they will equip parents to care for children in foster care effectively!
