Travis and Jaime Schutte knew they wanted to provide a safe loving home for children in need, but they also knew they needed to consider their biological children’s ages when saying yes. Shortly after being licensed, they got a call for two children that were around the same age as their biological children. They decided to jump in to help. Zach and Alex* came into their home and immediately bonded with their family.
Because Zach and Alex were moved quickly, all their family relative options hadn’t been fully explored yet. It turned out that they had loving grandparents that were able to welcome them into their home a few months later. A while after this, Travis and Jaime realized that they actually had mutual friends with the grandparents, through their church. They ended up at the same Christian motorcycle ministry. Since then, they have been able to stay connected and even provide respite care for the boys. They have plans to take all the kids to the zoo soon.
“It’s been a good experience and wonderful that the grandparents have custody of their grandchildren [and] we can keep in touch with them.”
Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries is so grateful for families like the Schutte’s who open their homes to children in need and connect with those close to those children. Because the goal of most foster care situations is reunification, this relationship between foster and biological family is especially aspirational!
