Why Are Foster Dads Heroes?
It’s not every day we get to celebrate the lesser-known heroes in our communities. When we think of heroes, we often think of uniforms and capes – but there are so many other types of heroes. In honor of Father’s Day, we want to explain why we believe foster dads are heroes.
In most societies, the concept of affectionate nurturing has been associated with a feminine role. Previous generations’ examples often taught us that dads are expected to provide structure and correction. However, it is a beautiful thing when one realizes a foster dad can excel in connecting to a child in his care with love, compassion, excitement, and hope. A foster dad worries, dreams, plans, cries, and rebuilds. They stay up all night with a sick toddler and counsel a heartbroken teenager.
“I think many people in our community would call my husband a champion for kids and their families. He works tirelessly to serve different organizations that impact the health and well-being of families and their children. Both professionally and personally, he strives to provide the best care possible. In our own family he is always up for an adventure. With fostering, he is patient and understanding. He is often our voice of reason. His kindness and gentle spirit has grown even more through fostering.”

Foster dads struggle. Foster dads succeed. Foster dads are an important piece of a very big puzzle, and it is truly a position of honor. They are a father to the fatherless, and because of their willingness to provide a safe family today, they are helping to create safe families tomorrow.
As they say, not all heroes wear capes.
