Fall Football Frenzy

Football fever struck The Hill this fall, as we have children and youth in all four homes participating in various levels of the sport. Some are just beginning with flag football. Others have progressed to the junior varsity and varsity level.

Home Parent Dad in the Hubbell Home, Jordan Parks, says, “We have one boy playing flag football and another playing tackle. The older of the two, a fourth grader, scored FIVE touchdowns in their first scrimmage!”

“We have two middle school boys playing,” says Mom in the Atherton Home, Mandy Wallace. “One was injured during practice at the beginning of the season. He’s had to deal with the disappointment of not playing, after looking forward to football for months. We’ve seen growth from it, though. Someone from school noticed too, and commented they’ve never seen him smile so much!”

Mom Merri Heberlein in The Wright Home loves to brag on her high school player, “He has been playing his heart out on the football field this fall and rocking everyone’s socks off! He’s one of the JV star players, and also dresses out for the varsity team. He came home one night so sore that he could hardly walk, but when I asked him how he thought the game went, he said, ‘It was awesome!’”

Lastly, Home Parent Dad Al Howell tells about his two players in the Zimmer Home.

“Our six-year-old is playing flag football for the very first time. He says, ‘The best thing is being a good sport!!!’ Sounds like he’s already learned the basic fundamental of ANY sport.

Al also adds, “Once again this year, our 6th grade girl wanted to go out for the football team.”

You may wonder, with football being a predominately male sport, if that’s caused a problem for her. Al says that so for, it isn’t much of a factor.

“She loves football, so as long as she’s given the opportunity, she wants to play. As a girl, she has experienced a little opposition this year from a fellow teammate. So far it hasn’t been a deterrent. In fact, I think it’s made her work even harder to prove herself.”

Six or sixteen, male or female, learning and growing through all of the disciplines of team sports is an awesome opportunity for our kids. Thanks for making it possible!
