All About Trust-Based Relational Intervention

Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries has a training coming up in May/June that is great for anyone who works with children in foster care. Ahead of that training, we wanted to talk about why we offer it and why we think it’s important.

In 2020, we began offering TBRI® training in the community. Trust-Based Relational Intervention is a therapeutic model that equips caregivers to provide effective support for children from hard places. TBRI® was developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross out of Texas Christian University.

Some of our staff members were introduced to TBRI® a few years ago at the Empowered to Connect conference.

“We got to watch it and we just started seeing these snippets of what it looked like and how it was different than other things that we had done before,” Paige Douce, Family Advocacy Director and TBRI® Practitioner, said. “After experiencing it and seeing the healing power of this parenting intervention, we really believe in it.”

Our January/February TBRI® class was held at CenterPoint Church in Columbia. On the last day of the course, participants work together to do what’s called a nurture group.

Coyote Hill Foster Care Ministries now has four TBRI® practitioners on staff and two more in training. We worked to train all of our direct-care staff in the intervention, and then opened it up to the greater mid-Missouri community.

We recommend this training to anyone: families, school professionals, case managers, CASA, and others who work with those in foster/adoptive homes or from hard places.

“TBRI® is focused on the whole child,” Paige said. “It’s attachment-based. It’s a journey of being able to give children what they might have missed whenever they were developing. We want to be able to heal – not just have a good relationship or be able to navigate different things – but really heal their history to be able to move forward and hopefully be secure adults.”

Alex LeCure is a CASA volunteer and a single foster dad.

Over the course of the last year, we have been able to offer TBRI® in the community several times. Alex LeCure is a CASA volunteer and single foster dad. He said he highly recommends the training.

“I took the [TBRI®] class to learn how to best work with kids with higher level behaviors,” Alex said. “I learned a TON. The focus on trust as being the foundation of correcting, connecting and empowering youth along with the many strategies to implement those principals made this the BEST training I’ve ever attended.”

Our next TBRI® training begins May 8 at Prairie Grove Baptist Church in Columbia. Click the button to register today!
