Grand Opening Highlights

Scorching, sultry, July weather?  Who cares?!  That’s what our supporters seemed to say on Sunday, July 10 as a wonderful crowd turned out for our first-ever ribbon cutting ceremony, at the new Overton Arena.

Our recently completed arena was built entirely from the support of Doris Overton and her family, in memory of her late husband, Jack Overton.  Doris herself did the honors of cutting the ribbon, along with the Columbia Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors.  We believe it may have been the chamber’s first ribbon cutting ceremony with horses in attendance!

Following the ceremony and plaque presentation to the Overton family, everyone enjoyed strolling around the 14 stall stable, petting horses as they went.  Refreshments were served, live fiddle music was provided by John Williams, and our youth and children showed off their riding skills.  From the youngest to the oldest, they all enjoyed the chance to ride around the arena and show observers what they’ve learned.

Not only did our kids enjoy showing off their skills…they also spent days in advance preparing for the event.  As well as spending hours and hours practicing with the horses, they also helped paint banners, clean up the stable, the property & their homes, and even helped make some of the refreshments.  (By the way, HyVee was generous in giving us a nice discount on the refreshments that kids just can’t create – such as fruit!)

A big “thank you” to the Overton family, and to everyone who came out in the heat to show your support; it meant a lot to our children!
