Here’s a recent story from Case Manager, Paige Brokaw, who oversees the daily activity in our Education Center:
At the Education Center we have two goals each day:
- Be respectful to other children, adults, and others through our actions and words.
- Work hard at whatever our task may be for the day. We don’t care so much if the work gets done or not, as we do about giving 100% effort.
At the end of each day, each child reflects on their day and whether or not they met the two goals. If they have, they get to choose from an assortment of prizes and tokens. Tokens can be saved up for different activities, anywhere from a trip to get a snack from the local grocery store, to a movie or dining out, to a girls night at my house.
Chloe* attends the Education Center each day after school, and had saved up 32 tokens. She chose a girls’ night for her reward. When we talked about what she wanted the night to look like, she asked if she could invite her sisters to come celebrate with her, also. Chloe wrote about what her dream girls’ night could look like and we went from there. She decided she wanted pizza for dinner, crafts and a movie, cheesecake for dessert, and donuts for breakfast. It happened to be a beautiful day, so we also went to the park. The girls had a blast getting to play, dance, cook, craft, read, and be together all evening.
It was beautiful to see four sisters together, enjoying one another. It was a treat for just the four of them to be all together for an evening and a sleep over. It was a joyful reminder to me: this truly is the heart of our ministry, to be able to give children the opportunity to be a kid, to enjoy life along with their siblings, and to know God’s love.
As we sat around the dinner table, we were sharing the things we were most thankful for about one another. Chloe piped up and said, “We should all say one thing we are most thankful for about God!” The joy she has is a beautiful example of the joy He has given us, and it was a delight to see it radiating out of her.
By the way, Chloe is working hard in the Ed Center, saving her tokens and making plans for her next girls’ night, and her sisters are asking when the next sleepover will be.
Thanks for your support, which makes these wonderful childhood opportunities a reality.
